Mokuteki

Support for Ukrainian civil society

Mokuteki responds to the needs of leaders of humanitarian, human rights and aid organizations in Ukraine.

It is a way to empower individuals and organizations.

About the initiative

The method of Mokuteki (目的, “purpose” in Japanese) is based on the assumption that burnout affecting individuals is a phenomenon embedded in relationships, structures of the organization’s work and activities, and sociopolitical context.

The purpose of Mokuteki is to empower leaders of Ukrainian human rights, humanitarian and aid organizations – their agency, resources and ability to make decisions.

2025 edition

Based on methods and Culture Shock Foundation’s tools developed over the years in cooperation with Magda Adamowicz from the Araminta collective, we created a training program for specialists supporting leaders of Ukrainian human rights organizations. Training attendees learned how to use coaching methods and apply knowledge of burnout, stress, trauma and organizational management in their work with leaders.

The training program included:

  1. A cycle of 4-hour-long online workshops with experts:
    • Introductory session: Paulina Jędrzejewska and Magda Adamowicz;
    • Analysis of burnout – individual level: Anastasiia Medko;
    • Analysis of burnout on the organizational level: Natalia Sarata (RegenerAkcja, Poland) and Magdalena Sadura (Polskie Forum Migracyjne, Poland);
    • Coaching in the face of burnout and trauma: Paula King (Kingstown College, a member of the management board of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council Global);
    • Coaching for mental resilience – coaching of trauma survivors – Sam Argent (Kingstown College in Dublin/Still Flow Coaching Through Change);
    • Summary of progress in the project – Paulina Jędrzejewska;
    • When the body says “no” – professional burnout and our bodies: Sat Dharam Kaur (Compassionate Inquiry) and Anastasiia Medko.
  2. 5-day training in Murzasichle – bodywork, integration of knowledge: Paulina Jędrzejewska

During individual coaching sessions (120 h in total), coaches that we trained (14 people) worked with Ukrainian leaders (12 people), creating conditions for them to regenerate and grow.

Key areas of work:

  • burnout prevention,
  • stress management and emotional resilience building,
  • human resource and organizational management.

Simultaneously, we worked on the Ukrainian-language version of the Burnout Aid website, as well as the Russian-language version targeted at audiences from countries in Central and Eastern Europe. We have adapted the REFLOW test and the Knowledge Zone, among others.

2026 edition

  1. We summarize the 2025 edition of Mokuteki:
    • analysis of Mokuteki trainees’ experiences;
    • analysis of the course of coaching processes;
    • identification of the project’s strengths and areas that need refinement;
    • qualitative study of two organizations whose leaders took part in the coaching cycle, which allowed us to assess effectiveness and durability of changes.
  2. We empower the Mokuteki community:
